Riverside Cemetery

History

Riverside Cemetery was established in 1880 after the York Street Cemetery reached capacity.  The first burials occurred in 1880.  The City purchased additional property to expand Riverside in the early 1920s.  Many prominent figures from Plymouth’s history are buried at Riverside including members of the founding families like the Pennimans, the Blunks, the Starkweathers, and the Wilcoxes.  There are veterans from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War and other wars buried in Riverside.  Veteran graves are marked with an American flag each year for Memorial Day in remembrance of their service.

Location

Riverside Cemetery is located at 680 Plymouth Road.  It is located behind the 35th District Court (660 Plymouth Rd.) and behind Massey Field.  The Cemetery office is located at 1231 Goldsmith.

Graves and Mausoleum

The Department of Municipal Services operates and maintains Riverside Cemetery.

There are two interment location options in Riverside Cemetery: above-ground in the Garden Mausoleum or in-ground in a grave.

Above Ground

The Garden Mausoleum accommodates full-body entombment in crypts and cremated entombment in niches.  A single niche accommodates two cremain entombments.  A single crypt accommodates one full-body entombment.  A double crypt accommodates two full-body entombments.  These rules are subject to change and may depend on other factors like casket size.

In Ground

A single, adult grave accommodates full-body burial and cremain burial.  One adult grave accommodates one full-body burial and two cremain burials or four cremain burials.  These rules are subject to change.

Cost and Fees

The fees to purchase a grave, niche, or crypt depend on residency status.  Opening and closing fees also depend on residency status.  Taxpaying residents of the City of Plymouth get discounted pricing because their property tax dollars support the Cemetery.  The price of niches and crypts include the opening and closing for the first interment (additional fee for Sunday/Holiday) and one nameplate.  These costs are subject to change and do not include every situation or burial arrangement.  Currently, payment is accepted via cash or check only.
