Permit Applications

Please note that City of Plymouth addresses are either three or four digits and range from 100 to 1800.  A Plymouth mailing address may fall under another municipality's jurisdiction.

You may apply for a permit in person at City Hall or via mail or fax. In addition, you may apply online for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits by clicking the link to our Access My Government page below.

Permit Requirements

  • The building permit must be posted where it is visible form the street.
  • All permits expire six months from the date of issue or the last inspection
  • A recall charge of $50 will be charged for the re-inspection of work not ready for scheduled inspection
  • Property owners, contractors, or their agents must be present to let inspectors into the premises for indoor inspections
  • Do not cover work until all required inspections have been made
  • The City of Plymouth enforces the following Codes:
    • 2015 Michigan Building Code
    • 2015 Michigan Residential Code
    • 2015 Michigan Plumbing Code
    • 2015 Michigan Mechanical Code
    • 2014 National Electrical Code
    • 2015 International Fire Code

Inspections

  • All inspection requests must be submitted by 3:30 p.m. the regular business day prior to the inspection
  • There are two ways to schedule an inspection. You will need the address of work, permit number, contact number, and type of permit. If you request a specific inspection time we will contact you by 4:30 p.m, only if there is a scheduling conflict.

  • Building inspections are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Plumbing and Mechanical inspections are conducted starting at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
  • Electrical inspections are conducted after 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
  • The Community Development Department hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Housing and Rental Inspections

  • Housing and rental inspections are required for residential properties and apartment complexes that have three units or greater, per the State of Michigan
  • A Certificate of Compliance is issued after the successful inspection of the rental property. It is valid for two years after the inspection date, and expires each  December 31 on a recurring basis
  • Inspections can be set up by calling the office at 734-453-1234 ext. 232
  • Inspection times are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
